Jake Jacas, real name Jake Moses, was a British solo male black artist signed to Motown in 1984. Jake released a very sought after single, “Hold Me” on the actual Motown label  itself, in 1985, but then vanished from prominence until he reached Ian Levine. He was also a regularly gigging musician, most notably because he was Sade’s saxophone player in her band. He was managed by his future wife, Kim Revie, and recorded a great album for Motorcity in 1991,  produced by Ian Levine and Billy Griffin. This amazing song,  DON’T KNOW WHEN TO DANCE, has long been cited by Ian Levine as one of his all time favourites from the entire huge Motorcity catalogue. He wrote it back in 1992 with Junior Giscombe, especially for Frankie Gaye. Junior vocalled the original demo. Tragically Frankie Gaye got debilitatingly sick with cancer, and he later died, so Ian then asked Jake to learn the song which he loved so very much. Pat Lewis then laid down all of the remarkable backing vocals, at Ian’s request, using the exact same backing vocal style as her wonderful arrangement on the Northern Soul classic BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. It was full of deep rich five part harmonies, just like the Friends Of Distinction. This wonderful record has never been released until now, with a sparkling brand new 2023 mix done by the legendary Nigel Lowis. This new mix has given an old overlooked song a wonderful brand new lease of life.
